Facts about the Coronavirus in the Dominican Republic:

Some things simply can’t be discussed away. Especially facts and statistics. And the Coronavirus already arrived in the Dominican Republic. I really like the page worldometers.info. A very clear and informative page with all worldwide statistics to the recent situation.

According to them and the recent figures (March 14, 2020), there are 11 infected people with the Coronavirus and no fatalities.

  • March 1: 1st case in the Dominican Republic, a 62-year old Italian citizen who entered the country on February 22nd
  • March 6: 1 new case in the Dominican Republic (second case in the country): a Canadian tourist who was staying at a hotel in Bayahibe
  • March 8: 3 new cases in Dominican Republic: three Dominicans who visited Italy.
  • March 14: On 13 March, the Minister of Public Health confirmed six new cases.

Now somethings very fishy here. From March 1 until March 14 there are only 11 reported cases. It looks like that the Coronavirus spreads very slow in the Dominican Republic. Much slower than in other countries.

How is it possible, that the Coronavirus spreads in the Dominican Republic slower than in other countries?

The easiest assumption would be, that climate is a factor.

It’s too early to know. The new coronavirus, which causes a respiratory disease called Covid-19, has infected more than 120,000 people worldwide, but it only appeared in central China at the end of last year. Officials of the World Health Organization said March 5 there’s no reason to believe temperature will play a role in the outbreak but that the subject was worth investigating.

Okay, so apparently no help from mild temperatures or a hot climate. What a bummer!

If we analyze the spread risks of the Coronavirus, the Dominican Republic is a high-risk country. Although the first confirmed cases came quite late in early March, I’m pretty sure, that unfortunately also the whole country will be infected and affected by that.

Why?

It’s the Dominican culture.

  • Handshakes and hello kisses.
  • Dancing Merengue all night long.
  • People share a beer together in a Colmado.
  • Sunday duty in churches.
  • Overcrowded public transports.

That’s just how it is. It’s a very social and touching culture.

In addition to that, it’s also the lack of education and missing hygienic measures. Very recently I saw a surprising improvement to that situation. Finally, my gym equipped itself with some cleaning and disinfection solution. Also, the supermarket service people disinfected the contact surfaces of the shopping carts. Employees wear respirator masks right now.

Good measures to limit or slow down the danger of infection. The mean and nasty thing about the Coronavirus is that the symptoms take some time to effect. Therefore, a lot of people don’t know, that they already have it.

Next page: But what about confirmed cases who weren’t made public yet?
