Caño Hondo – A natural waterpark in the Dominican Republic

Where is the difference between Paraíso Caño Hondo and Altos de Caño Hondo?

At this territory, there were two different installations. Paraíso Caño Hondo and Altos de Caño Hondo.

As a visitor, I couldn’t really see or feel the difference between these two hotels. They are both 3-star-rated and rather enhance than compete with each other. I didn’t see any major distinction between Paraíso Caño Hondo and Altos de Caño Hondo. Neither did I perceive any differences in the prices of the accommodation or the restaurant.

I stayed in Altos de Caño Hondo, which is located a bit on a slope. From there, you’ll have a stunning view over the adjacent valleys, but no immediate access to the natural water park. After not more than 5 minutes walking down the hill, you’ll reach the waterpark, restaurant and hotel amendments of Paraíso Caño Hondo.

Well, it depends of course what you want. If you want to wake up and directly take a swim at the natural pools, I would recommend Paraíso Caño Hondo. On the other hand, the water will also rush all day – and night. If you are very sensitive when it comes to sleep, you should rather chose Altos de Caño Hondo.

Paraíso Caño Hondo mass-advertises and communicates, that they are one of the 10 best eco travel destinations of the world according to Forbes. This sounds like a great and prestigious award. But I couldn’t verify this information with an online source by Forbes, neither did I find the full list of the other 9 eco tourism destinations.

Whether they are on number 1 or on number 10, this is quite a success, if compared to the whole world. But neither could I verify this information online, nor did I find out which rank they got exactly nor was the year of this award mentioned.

What means Paraíso Caño Hondo?

The translation of Paraíso Caño Hondo would literally mean ‘deep tube paradise’.

  • paraíso – paradise
  • caño – hube
  • hondo – deep

‘Altos de Caño Hondo’ describes more or less the inclined location on the slope of the hill. Not very creative though. But calling its companion ‘paradise’ isn’t more quaint either 🙂
