But what about confirmed cases who weren’t made public yet?

Watch out! We are leaving descriptive facts, statistics and observations and enter a highly speculative area. Everything I write now is not ‘made out of fantasy’, but deals with possible scenarios. Far away from conspiracy theories, but simple mind games.

Although I can’t really proof it, I am pretty sure, that there are more cases of the Coronavirus in the Dominican Republic than officially stated in statistics. The Ministry of Public Health (Ministerio de Salud Pública) is responsible in the Dominican Republic for all these matters around the Coronavirus.

And of course, they obey the government. But the government is at the moment busy to keep the population busy with the upcoming elections. All negative influences could definitely interfere the political situation in the Dominican Republic. And the Coronavirus would be a pretty negative influence for the Dominican Republic.

So why not waiting at least to accomplish the municipality elections on Sunday before dealing with the Coronavirus?

The Dominican population is right now deflected and doesn’t really pay attention to the Coronavirus. Of course, there are news from abroad, people recognize that and see it still as a danger far away from them. Of course, the Chinese and the European people have this problem, but not the Dominican Republic.

I am pretty sure, that the population is a little sedated with the electoral manifesto at the moment that the political parties are proclaiming. But as soon as the elections are done on Sunday – and I really hope, that they won’t have any trouble this time with their automated voting systems – the official vote counts will be published.

In my opinion, it’s impossible that in a country with all these social interactions like handshakes, kisses, hugs, dances, sharing drinks, etc. has ONLY 11 CASES after the outbreak two weeks ago.

A few Asian people in front of a supermarket inside of Agora Mall. It was earlier a common Asian thing to have a mouthpiece in public. At least I saw it a thousand times before. Nowadays I see more and more people in Santo Domingo wear these masks. Not only Asians, also Dominicans.

There MUST BE more infections and maybe even fatalities due to the Coronavirus which are unreported. I expect these real figures to be drastically much higher than the public figures. But I expect the Dominican government to suppress this information to have it calm and decent in the country.

In my opinion, it is irresponsible to actually hold this election tomorrow. Unfortunately, the government has no other choice, as they cannot postpone these elections for a second time. It will have to be voted, simply to avoid protests and unrest in the country.

If the Coronavirus spreads worldwide with the same patterns, the Dominican Republic will never ever be an exceptional case. Especially tomorrow with the municipality elections, it will be the ‘perfect moment’ for the Coronavirus to spread. Millions of Dominicans are getting together and the virus will conquer the island. Quite uncool situation.

On Monday, there’ll be governmental announcements about the real statistics of Coronavirus in the Dominican Republic. Time to tell the truth. Showing something like a plan of action.

Estimated number of unknown cases do exist in every statistic. But I expect, that the dark figures are drastically higher in the Dominican Republic than officially stated. Not sure, if then the real figures will be made public. But I wouldn’t be surprised, that there’ll be a surprising upsurge next week with the Corona infections and deaths.

What will be the plan of action of the Dominican government for the Coronavirus?

Difficult to say, because I am not a Dominican politician. But I simply expect, that there will be the same measures than other countries are already doing:

  • Closing schools and universities
  • Limiting down their public transportation
  • Prohibit entry and exit into the country

And the last point has just been executed a few minutes ago. Goddamn, another newspaper was just quicker with the presidential facts than I am with the correct assumptions in my blog. Bad luck!

Beginning from Monday, March 16 on 6am all flights of Dominican Republic will be suspended from and to the following destinations:

  • Europa
  • China
  • Korea (Of course, they mean South Korea)
  • Iran

In addition to that, all cruise ships are not allowed to embark to the Dominican Republic for at least one month.

All these measures come of course far too late, if the municipality elections were already done before. Because the Coronavirus will rapidly spread amongst the population.

But some organizations and institutions are already reacting to the lack of decision making from the Dominican government. This university couldn’t wait forever until the government of the Dominican Republic made a decision and they made their own decisions.
